In 1950, construction began on Dixmont’s new power and boiler building which would replace the old plant across the railroad tracks (shown below) when it opened in 1953. The building housed three large boilers that provided steam for all of the hospital’s facilities, along with a coal-burning power plant. Utilities were distributed to each building through underground tunnels that carried steam pipes and electrical trunk lines. One long tunnel ran directly from the power plant to Reed Hall, providing an easy way for trespassers to explore the property undetected.
